  • Kevin Chaplin

    Kevin

    Chaplin

    CEO

    Kevin is responsible for overseeing Kardium’s operations, leading the executive team, and setting the company’s strategic direction, while also engaging with key external stakeholders. Kevin joined Kardium shortly after its founding, and has played a pivotal role in securing capital, building a premier investor syndicate, and leading the company through its successful FDA pivotal study. Under his leadership, Kardium has grown to a team of over 600 employees. Prior to leading Kardium as the CEO, Kevin held senior roles in product management, marketing and technical positions at Kodak, Sierra Wireless, and Accenture. He holds a BSc in Chemical Engineering from the University of Cape Town and is also an active board member of Life Sciences BC.

    President and COO

    Doug is President and COO at Kardium, and one of the company’s original co-founders. Prior to Kardium, Doug held the position of General Manager, Proofing and Color at Eastman Kodak Company, and was responsible for the $55M worldwide proofing and colour business and a 130-person team. He graduated with a BASc in Electrical Engineering from Simon Fraser University.

    CFO

    As CFO at Kardium, Koert plays a key role in day-to-day operations as well as supporting Kardium in reaching its larger strategic financial goals. He leads the finance team, which is responsible for reporting and managing Kardium’s financial performance, reporting, and forecasting. In the past year, Koert has helped raise a total of $350M to finance the company. Alongside funding, he also helps manage key relationships with investors, analysts, and bankers as the company prepares to go public. Koert received his BCom in Finance and Accounting with honors from the University of British Columbia.

    Koert’s favorite hobbies? Team sports, cycling, skiing and coaching his kids’ hockey teams.

  • Daniel Weinkam

    Weinkam

    VP, Engineering

    Daniel is VP, Engineering at Kardium and plays an instrumental role in the staffing, prioritization, and coordination of product design, development and verification. Beginning his career at Kardium in 2008, Daniel leads the team that developed the proof of concept for the Globe RF Controller. He also played a key role in supporting the first human clinical studies, leading up to receiving the CE mark for the Globe System. Daniel received his BASc in Engineering at Simon Fraser University.

    Interesting facts about Daniel: He’s a licensed pilot who enjoys flying a Cessna and also holds more than 22 patents.

  • Stefan Avall

    VP, Product Management

    As VP, Product Management at Kardium, Stefan loves being at the nexus of science, engineering and medicine. Fueled by building a world-leading medical device company in Vancouver, Stefan is responsible for Kardium’s commercial launch as well as its product management, marketing and clinical research. One of his career highlights at Kardium was overseeing the PULSAR IDE study—from initial design and recruitment of world-class physicians to the final data read-out for the paroxysmal cohort. Stefan holds a BSc in Biophysics from the University of British Columbia (UBC) and is on the Industry Advisory Committee of the UBC School of Biomedical Engineering.

    Fun fact about Stefan: He makes his daily coffee with a bike pump. (Though most colleagues know this already!)

  • Naghmeh Ghafari

    Ghafari

    VP, Product Quality Engineering

    Naghmeh is VP, Product Quality Engineering at Kardium, where she leads quality engineering efforts across the entire product lifecycle, from design through to post-market. She is responsible for developing and executing strategies to enhance the design and manufacturing of the Globe System. She also oversees key post-market functions, including service, support and installations, and complaint investigations. Since joining Kardium in 2012, Naghmeh has held leadership roles spanning quality control, risk management, and manufacturing product quality. She played a pivotal role in building and scaling these functions to support Kardium’s growth and innovation. Naghmeh holds a BSc in Electrical Engineering, an MSc in Software Engineering and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of Waterloo. She has also published multiple peer-reviewed papers in the field of software formal verification.

    VP, Manufacturing and Supply Chain

    As VP of Manufacturing and Supply Chain at Kardium, Peter plays a pivotal role in supply chain management, purchasing, ERP Systems implementation and materials management. Prior to Kardium, Peter held key management roles at Viking Air and Kodak. He graduated with a BSc in Physics from the University of British Columbia.

    As VP of Talent, Candice is responsible for all things related to an employee’s experience—from the moment they’re interested in working at Kardium through their entire career journey. Candice has grown the number of Kardium employees from 200 in 2003 to nearly 500 currently. Using a co-op campus model, she has also grown the internship program—increasing it from 15 co-ops/interns to over 49 co-ops. Throughout all this growth, Candice has been pivotal in maintaining a strong, positive company culture. She holds a BA in Psychology from Simon Fraser University and is an Associate Certified Coach from the International Coaching Federation (ICF).

    VP, Regulatory Affairs & Quality Assurance

    Ricardo is VP, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance and began his career at Kardium in 2010. Since, he’s played a key role in building Kardium’s QA and RA teams and has revamped the company’s Quality Management System to support the in-house development and manufacturing of high-risk cardiovascular products. Some of his notable achievements at Kardium include securing the CE marking of the Globe System and attaining the Premarket Approval (PMA) of the Globe Pulsed Field System. Ricardo holds a BSc in Mechanical Engineering and a MSc in Biomedical Engineering from the Universidad de Los Andes and has over 25 years of progressive RA & QA leadership experience in the medical device industry.

    Biggest win at Kardium so far: Having developed an amazing, best-in-class product that will have a tremendous impact on the lives of millions of people worldwide.

    Mr. Michelson brings over 20 years of leadership experience to the Chairman position. He is actively involved in the high tech community in Vancouver and around the world, serving on a number of boards. He was CEO of Creo Inc. and a member of the board from 1991 until Kodak purchased Creo for over C$1 Billion in May 2005. Prior to Creo, he was CEO of Opal Inc., a semi-conductor equipment company, and Chief Operating Officer of Optrotech Ltd., a developer and manufacturer of optical and imaging systems for the electronics industry.

    Amos Michelson holds a Master of Business Administration from Stanford Graduate School of Business and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the Technion, Israel Institute of Technology. He is a past member of the Premier’s Technology Council and in 1999 was named “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Ernst & Young. In 2005, Mr. Michelson was named the “BCTIA Person of the Year”, an award presented to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to the technology industry during the year.

    David J. Rosa is chief executive officer at Intuitive and a member of the Board of Directors since 2024.

    Rosa joined Intuitive in March 1996 and has held leadership positions in engineering, clinical development, marketing, and product development. In April 2011, Rosa was promoted to the position of senior vice president, emerging procedures and technology, and transitioned to the position of senior vice president, scientific affairs. In August 2014, Rosa was promoted to the position of executive vice president and chief scientific officer. In June 2015, Rosa was appointed as executive vice president and chief commercial officer. In January 2019, he took on additional responsibility as executive vice president and chief business officer. In January 2022, Rosa transitioned to chief strategy and growth officer. In May 2023, Rosa was promoted to the role of president of the company.

    A holder of multiple patents, Rosa earned a BS in mechanical engineering from California Polytechnic University at San Luis Obispo and an MS in mechanical engineering from Stanford University.

    Mr. Alba was a co-founder, director and President of Galileo Technology from 1994 to 2001, director of Marvell (MRVL) from 2001 to 2004, director of Pixer from 2005 to 2008, director of Annapurna Labs from 2011 to 2015, director of Habana Labs from 2016 to 2020, and director of Banias Labs from 2020 to 2022. During his career, Mr. Alba has worked as a design engineer, technical marketing engineer, technology business executive, and active founding investor. Mr. Alba has also served as a board member of various non-profit organizations. Mr. Alba holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from the National Polytechnic Institute in Mexico City, Master of Science degrees in Computer Engineering and Engineering Management from the University of Southern California, and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Santa Clara.

    Ian Ihnatowycz is the President and CEO of First Generation Capital Inc., a private investment holding company. Formerly President and Chief Executive Officer of Acuity Investment Management Inc. and Acuity Funds Ltd., Mr. Ihnatowycz founded Acuity in 1990 to provide discretionary asset management for pension, foundation and private clients as well as mutual and pooled funds. A leader in sustainable investing, Acuity was the first Canadian advisor to the United Nations on the integration of environmental, social and governance factors within investment management, and the firm had won many awards for investment performance. On February 1, 2011, Acuity and its assets of $7.6 billion were sold.

    Mr. Ihnatowycz has served on the boards of numerous not-for-profit and professional organizations and private companies, is currently a member of the Board of Directors of Myca Health Inc., Real Imaging Ltd., Fulcrum Management Solutions Ltd., Acerus Pharmaceuticals Corporation and the Royal Conservatory of Music, is a member of the Ivey Advisory Board, the Ian O. Ihnatowycz Institute for Leadership Advisory Board of the Ivey Business School and a member of the Investment Advisory Committee of Imperial Capital Acquisition Fund V.

    Mr. Ihnatowycz earned a B.Sc. from the University of Toronto, an MBA from the Ivey Business School, holds the CFA and Chartered Director designations, and recently received an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from Western University.
